Masters Of The Air: Review

WRITTEN BY PATRICK FROST

‘Apple TV’s Masters Of The Air soars expectations for me’

I recently finished Apple TV’s Maters Of The Air starring Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, and an incredible supporting cast alongside them. The background behind Masters of the air is a true story of an American air force base on Norfolk that follows the events of the 100th bombing group. Produced by two legends of the industry Tom Hanks’ and Steven Spielberg masters of air had a lot riding on its shoulders as Spielberg’s past works consists of two war time pieces Saving private Ryan and the critically acclaimed Band of Brothers which is loved around the world. But with all the hype that masters of air was going to the next Band of Brothers, but it was certainly its own thing and certainly impressed viewers and critics around the world. What Impressed me the most about Masters of air was its pacing throughout the 9 episodes and how we got to know not just the main characters Butlers Major Gale Cleven and Turners Major John Eagan but the smaller characters such as Anthony Boyle’s major Crosby and Nate Mann’s ‘Rosie’ Rosenthal both were exceptional in terms of their acting in this and drove a good majority of the story with Crosby narrating the events that occur throughout masters of air.

Another element that I found certainly a key part that makes masters of air one of my top shows of the year was the historical accuracy of the story but also the accuracy in the set design, costume, and even the aircraft themselves which the production made a B-17 flying fortress from scratch. The production also used the LED volume to simulate air combat battles and the skies around the actors themselves which I still find amazing what virtual production can do especially in a show like masters of air. From its accuracies in every department we have to mention the historical accuracies and the level of detail from taken us through war time England to war time Germany and see where this terrible war had taken our character how it changed who they are was a detail that I found very interesting and this allowed me to feel so much emotion towards the characters that had been terribly effected by the story and the war as a whole. With Every episode we got very close to a lot of the characters and their experiences throughout the narrative this was due to great scripts and great dialogue which really drove home the emotion that this series has.

Overall, both creators John Orloff whose credits consist of band of brothers and john shiban who’s a regular of Law and order both did an amazing job brining to life the true and incredibly emotional story together. Apple TV’s Masters of the air is certainly worth the watch and one of Apple TV’s standout shows of the year, definitely keep an eye out for it during award season come next year.
