Why Cinema Is Not Dead

WRITTEN BY GEORGE DAVIES

Over the last several years many have claimed that the art of cinema and the cinema experience, as a whole is dying. However, although there have been rough times for cinemas in recent years, primarily due to the pandemic, the cinema experience is far from dead.

In 2020, the worldwide Box Office was one of the lowest total gross ever recorded with the worldwide Box Office just making over two billion dollars. However, since post Covid, there has been a constant positive growth in total gross at the worldwide box office, showing that cinema is not dead and that it still has a place in our society.

Last year, 2023, the total gross at the Box Office had positive growth once again with the total gross going up by 20.9 percent from the year before, with it being the highest since the Covid pandemic. A big help towards the box office last year was the cultural cinematic event that was known as ‘Barbieheimer’. Where two of the most anticipated films of the year, Barbie and Oppenheimer, both filled with an A-List cast were being released on the same day, sparking the viral event. Both films performed exceptionally well at the box office and critically, with Barbie claiming the top spot for the highest grossing film of 2023, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer claiming an impressive third spot on the box office charts.

Although Cinema has taken some hard kicks in recent years, 2023 showed us that the cinema experience is still alive and that the appeal to sit in a dark room with friends still has a place in our society and in our lives.
